The tractor PTO shaft serves as the sole mechanical link between the tractor engine and the Jaylor twin auger TMR mixer’s planetary gearbox. Understanding how this PTO driveline shaft operates helps operators maintain peak mixing efficiency and avoid premature component wear.<\/p>\n

Power generation begins at the tractor’s engine, which produces rotational energy routed through the transmission to the rear-mounted PTO output stub. On models 5600 and 5650, this stub rotates at a standardized 540 RPM PTO shaft speed. On models 5750 and 5850, it rotates at 1000 rpm PTO shaft speed. The operator engages the tractor’s independent PTO clutch, which initiates rotation of the splined stub. The tractor-side PTO shaft yoke, with its matching internal spline profile, is locked onto this stub. As the stub turns, it drives the entire shaft assembly.<\/p>\n

Rotational force travels from the tractor-side yoke through the first PTO shaft universal joint, which accommodates the angular difference between the tractor’s PTO output axis and the shaft axis. The torque then passes through the outer telescoping PTO shaft tube, which is profiled in a lemon or triangular cross-section. This profile locks the inner and outer tubes rotationally while allowing free axial sliding as the distance between the tractor and mixer changes during turns, hitch adjustments, or movement over uneven ground. The inner tube telescopes within the outer tube, maintaining continuous torque transfer regardless of shaft length variation.<\/p>\n

From the inner tube, torque reaches the second universal joint at the implement end, which compensates for the angular offset between the shaft and the mixer’s gearbox input. The implement-side yoke connects directly to the planetary gearbox input shaft of the Jaylor mixer. The gearbox performs a critical speed reduction: on 540 RPM models, it converts the incoming 540 RPM to approximately 41 RPM at the twin augers; on 1000 RPM models, it reduces 1000 RPM to approximately 38 RPM. This reduction multiplies the torque substantially, providing the mechanical force needed to rotate two vertical augers equipped with cutting knives through densely packed hay, silage, grain, and mineral supplements.<\/p>\n
