Features of PTO Shaft for New Holland Square Baler
- CAT 5 Constant Velocity Design
This PTO driveline shaft utilizes a CAT 5 constant velocity joint configuration that maintains uniform rotational speed throughout the full range of operating angles. Unlike standard cross and bearing joints, the CV design minimizes vibration and torsional fluctuation, which is critical when powering the heavy flywheel mechanism inside New Holland BB series large square balers during high throughput baling runs. - Dual RPM Compatibility (540 and 1000)
Engineered to function as both a 540 PTO shaft and a 1000 rpm PTO shaft, this drive shaft offers maximum tractor compatibility. Whether your operation runs an older 540 rpm output tractor or a modern 1000 rpm unit, the appropriate PTO shaft yoke and spline configuration can be matched at the time of order, eliminating the need for a separate PTO shaft adapter in most cases. - Heavy Duty PTO Shaft Tubing
The PTO shaft tube is manufactured from high strength alloy steel PTO shaft tubing with precision drawn profiles for optimal strength to weight ratio. This heavy duty PTO shaft construction withstands the extreme cyclical torque loads generated by large square baler plunger systems, which can exceed 300 Nm during compressed bale formation cycles in dense hay or straw conditions. - Precision Ground Universal Joints
Every PTO shaft u joint in this assembly is precision ground and heat treated for extended service life. The PTO shaft universal joint bearings are sealed and pre-greased to resist contamination from dust, chaff, and moisture commonly encountered during baling operations. These joints are designed to handle the continuous articulation that occurs when a tractor and baler track over uneven field terrain during harvesting. - Integrated Safety Shield System
A complete PTO shaft cover guard assembly is included, meeting international safety standards for rotating driveline protection. The PTO shaft cover features a free spinning outer tube with integrated cone guards at both yoke ends, preventing accidental contact with the rotating shaft. This is an essential safety component that must always be installed and maintained during operation of any tractor PTO shaft system. - Multiple Spline Configurations Available
This PTO shaft for square baler is available with multiple PTO shaft yoke spline options, including 1.375 with 6 or 21 splines and 1.750 with 6 or 20 splines. This range of PTO shaft sizes ensures compatibility with virtually all major tractor brands used with New Holland BB series balers, and custom PTO shaft configurations can be arranged for non standard applications upon request from CMN Transmission.

Working Principle of Tractor PTO Drive Shaft for Square Baler
The PTO drive shaft for New Holland square balers BB9050, BB9060, BB9070, and BB9080 operates as the mechanical link that transfers rotational energy from the tractor's power take off output to the baler's input shaft. The working principle begins at the tractor's rear PTO stub, where the PTO shaft yoke on the tractor end of the assembly engages with the splined output. When the operator activates the PTO, the tractor's engine driven gear train rotates the PTO stub at either 540 or 1000 RPM, depending on the tractor configuration.
This rotational force is transmitted through the first PTO shaft universal joint, which allows the driveline to operate at an angle between the tractor and the baler. The universal joint consists of a cross shaped trunnion with four needle bearing caps that permit the yoke to pivot smoothly while continuously transmitting torque. The rotation then passes through the main PTO shaft tube, which is the telescoping section of the assembly. The telescoping function is essential because the distance between the tractor PTO output and the baler input changes constantly as the tractor turns, traverses uneven ground, or adjusts its drawbar position. The inner and outer tubes slide within each other on a splined interface, allowing the shaft to extend and retract while maintaining full torque transfer.
At the baler end, a second PTO shaft u joint connects to the rear jack shaft assembly, which features its own bearing mount. This jack shaft bridges the final connection to the baler's gearbox input. The constant velocity design of this CAT 5 PTO driveline shaft ensures that the output speed at the baler end matches the input speed from the tractor without the pulsation that occurs in single joint drivelines. This uniform speed is particularly important for large square balers, where the plunger mechanism and knotter system require consistent, predictable rotational input to produce properly formed and tied bales.
The entire system is protected by the PTO shaft cover, which rotates freely around the working shaft and prevents operator contact with the spinning components. If an overload condition occurs, such as a plugged baler chamber, the PTO shaft shear bolt or shear pin PTO shaft mechanism is designed to break at a predetermined torque threshold, protecting both the driveline and the baler gearbox from catastrophic damage.

Applications of Square Baler PTO Shafts
1. Large Scale Hay Production
This square baler PTO shaft is the primary driveline for commercial hay farms producing thousands of large square bales per season from alfalfa, timothy, orchard grass, and mixed hay crops. High volume operations depend on the reliability of every PTO shaft part to maintain continuous throughput during narrow cutting and baling windows dictated by weather.
2. Straw Baling After Grain Harvest
After wheat, barley, oat, or rice harvest, this tractor PTO shaft powers the baler to compress and package straw residues into dense large square bales for livestock bedding, mushroom substrate, erosion control, and industrial applications. The heavy duty PTO shaft construction handles the sustained operation required when baling across large grain stubble fields in rapid succession.
3. Silage and Haylage Baling
While large square balers are most commonly associated with dry hay, some operations also use BB9050 through BB9080 models for baling higher moisture forage that will be wrapped for silage or haylage. The increased crop weight and higher material density in these conditions place additional torque demands on the PTO drive shafts, making a robust, well maintained driveline absolutely critical to preventing downtime.
4. Custom Harvesting and Baling
Custom operators who move their New Holland BB series balers between multiple farms and regions rely on this agricultural PTO shaft to withstand the elevated annual usage hours common in contract work. A quality replacement of New Holland PTO shaft assemblies allows custom harvesters to maintain their schedule without unexpected failures that would cost both time and client trust during competitive baling season.

Installation Steps
Proper installation of this PTO shaft for square baler is essential for safe operation and maximum service life. Before beginning, ensure the tractor engine is off, the PTO is disengaged, the parking brake is set, and all hydraulic pressure is relieved. Remove any existing worn or damaged tractor PTO drive shaft assembly by first detaching the baler end yoke from the input shaft, then sliding the shaft forward to disengage the tractor end yoke from the PTO stub. Take note of the original shaft's orientation and length.
Begin installation by identifying the tractor end and baler end of the new PTO driveline shaft. The tractor end yoke will have the spline profile matching your tractor's PTO output, typically 1.375-21 for 1000 PTO shaft applications or 1.375-6 for 540 PTO shaft setups. Slide the tractor end yoke onto the PTO stub shaft and ensure the locking mechanism, whether a push pin, collar, or quick release coupler, fully engages. Check that the yoke seats fully and there is no axial play beyond the normal telescoping range.
Next, extend the telescoping PTO shaft tube section to the approximate length needed to reach the baler's input shaft. Align the baler end PTO shaft yoke with the rear jack shaft splines, typically 1.750-6, and slide it into position. Secure with the appropriate retaining hardware. Verify the rear bearing mount is properly bolted to the baler frame and that the jack shaft rotates freely without binding.
Once both ends are connected, install the PTO shaft cover guard system. Ensure the safety shield tubes are in place over the entire length of the shaft, that the cone guards at each end are properly attached, and that the restraining chains are secured to prevent the guard from rotating with the shaft. Check the telescoping overlap of the inner and outer tubes; the minimum overlap should not be less than one third of the closed length of the telescoping section to ensure structural integrity during extension.
Finally, start the tractor with the PTO disengaged, walk around to visually confirm all connections are secure, then engage the PTO at idle speed. Listen for any unusual noise, vibration, or knocking. Gradually increase RPM to the operating speed, either 540 or 1000, and confirm smooth operation. Check the PTO shaft shear bolt or shear bolt PTO shaft protection device is correctly installed with the specified bolt grade before commencing field work.

Common Troubleshooting of Tractor PTO Shafts
1. Excessive Vibration During Operation
If the PTO shaft vibrates noticeably during use, the most common cause is a worn PTO shaft universal joint with excessive bearing play. Inspect all u joints by grasping the shaft near each joint and checking for looseness. Other causes include a bent PTO shaft tube, improper phasing of the yokes, or operating at an angle beyond the recommended range. Ensure both yoke ears are in the same plane (in phase) when the shaft is assembled. If the vibration began suddenly, also check whether the PTO shaft shear bolt has partially failed, which can cause imbalanced loading.
2. Shaft Will Not Telescope Smoothly
Difficult or jerky telescoping action is typically caused by dried, contaminated, or insufficient grease on the splined interface inside the PTO shaft tubing. Separate the inner and outer tube sections, clean the splines with a wire brush, inspect for galling or burrs, and re-grease with EP2 lithium complex grease. If the splines are severely worn or damaged, the PTO shaft tube sections will need to be replaced. Never operate with a telescoping section that binds, as this transfers shock loads directly to the universal joints and yokes.
3. Shear Bolt Breaks Repeatedly
If the shear bolt PTO shaft protection system breaks frequently, the root cause is usually excessive torque demand from the baler. Check for a plugged bale chamber, dull knives, incorrectly adjusted bale density settings, or excessive crop feed rate. Also verify that the correct grade PTO shaft shear bolt is being used; never substitute a higher strength bolt, as this defeats the purpose of the overload protection and can cause severe damage to the baler gearbox, PTO shaft yoke, or tractor PTO output shaft.
4. Unusual Noise at Startup or During Operation
Clicking or clunking sounds when the PTO is first engaged can indicate worn splines in the PTO shaft yoke, a loose connection at either the tractor or baler end, or a failing universal joint. A continuous whining or grinding noise may point to a problem with the rear jack shaft bearing mount. Shut down the PTO immediately if any metallic grinding sound is heard, as continued operation can cause rapid escalation of damage to the PTO drive shaft and connected components.
5. Shaft Guard Does Not Rotate Freely
If the PTO shaft cover guard tube does not spin freely around the shaft, it may be binding due to deformation, accumulated debris between the guard and shaft, or a broken bearing at the guard support. A non rotating guard will be dragged around by friction with the spinning shaft, generating heat, wearing through the guard material, and creating a serious entanglement hazard. Stop operation immediately, clean or replace the guard components, and ensure the restraint chains are properly anchored before resuming work. Never operate the tractor PTO shafts without functional safety guards in place.

Square Baler PTO Shaft and Square Baler Gearbox
The square baler PTO shaft is the external rotating driveline that connects the tractor's power take off output to the baler. It is responsible for transmitting the raw rotational energy generated by the tractor engine across the gap between the two machines. This agricultural PTO shaft must accommodate changes in distance and angle between the tractor and baler during field operation, which is why it includes telescoping tubes and universal joints. The shaft itself does not change the speed or torque of the rotation; it simply delivers the tractor's PTO output, whether 540 or 1000 RPM, to the baler's input point as efficiently and safely as possible.
The square baler gearbox, mounted on the baler frame, receives the rotational input delivered by the PTO drive shaft and converts it into the specific speeds and torque levels required by the baler's internal mechanisms. The gearbox typically uses a combination of bevel gears and spur gears to redirect and multiply the input rotation, driving the plunger crank, the feeder mechanism, the knotter system, and the bale measuring wheel. Without the gearbox, the raw PTO speed would be unsuitable for the complex, multi speed internal operations of a large square baler.
The PTO shaft for New Holland square baler and the square baler gearbox form a continuous power transmission chain from tractor engine to baler functions. The PTO shaft is the delivery mechanism; the gearbox is the distribution mechanism. If the PTO driveline shaft fails or delivers inconsistent speed, the gearbox and all downstream components suffer. Conversely, if the gearbox seizes or develops excessive resistance, the overload feeds back through the PTO shaft, which is why a shear pin PTO shaft protection system or slip clutch PTO shaft mechanism is installed as a safeguard between them. Operators must maintain both components as a system, not independently, to ensure reliable performance of the complete baling operation. CMN Transmission supplies both PTO shafts and agricultural gearbox solutions, enabling customers to source a matched, compatible driveline system from a single supplier.

FAQ
Q: What PTO shaft size do I need for a New Holland BB9060 square baler?
A: The New Holland BB9060 requires a CAT 5 rated PTO drive shaft capable of handling the torque output needed for large square baling. The most common configuration is a 1000 PTO shaft with a 1.375-21 spline on the tractor end and a 1.750-6 spline on the baler input. CMN Transmission offers multiple PTO shaft sizes to match your specific tractor and baler combination.
Q: Is this PTO shaft compatible with both 540 RPM and 1000 RPM tractors?
A: Yes. This agricultural PTO shaft is available in both 540 PTO shaft and 1000 rpm PTO shaft configurations. The yoke spline pattern differs between the two speeds, so you must select the correct version when ordering. If you are unsure which RPM your tractor uses, check your tractor operator's manual or contact CMN Transmission for assistance with PTO shaft selection.
Q: Can I use this PTO shaft with a slip clutch instead of a shear bolt?
A: The standard configuration for this PTO shaft for square baler uses a PTO shaft shear bolt overload protection system, which is the OEM specified method for New Holland BB series balers. However, CMN Transmission can supply a PTO shaft with slip clutch option on request. A slip clutch PTO shaft provides automatic overload disengagement without the need to replace shear bolts after each incident, which some high volume operators prefer.
Q: How often should I grease the PTO shaft universal joints on my square baler?
A: The PTO shaft universal joint bearings should be greased every 8 operating hours or at the start of each working day, whichever comes first. Use EP2 lithium complex grease and pump until fresh grease purges from all four bearing caps on each PTO shaft u joint. Regular lubrication is the most critical maintenance step for extending the life of your tractor PTO drive shaft and preventing premature joint failure.
Q: What is the difference between a standard PTO shaft and a constant velocity PTO shaft?
A: A standard PTO drive shaft with single universal joints produces speed fluctuation at operating angles, which causes vibration and uneven power delivery. A constant velocity (CV) PTO driveline shaft, like this CAT 5 unit, uses a double joint or wide angle joint design that eliminates speed variation, delivering smooth, uniform rotation to the baler regardless of operating angle. CV shafts are recommended for large square balers due to their high torque demands.
Q: Will this PTO shaft fit my tractor if it has a 1.375-20 spline output?
A: Yes. CMN Transmission offers this tractor PTO shaft with a 1.375-20 spline PTO shaft yoke option specifically for tractors with that output configuration. When placing your order, specify your tractor's PTO spline count and diameter so the correct yoke is supplied. If you have an uncommon spline type, custom PTO shaft configurations and PTO shaft adapter solutions are also available upon request.
Q: What grade of shear bolt should I use with this square baler PTO shaft?
A: Always use the PTO shaft shear bolt grade specified in your New Holland baler operator's manual. Using a bolt with higher shear strength than specified defeats the overload protection function and risks damage to the baler gearbox, PTO shaft, and tractor. CMN can supply correct specification shear bolt PTO shaft replacement bolts as part of their PTO shaft parts catalog. Keep several spare shear bolts in your field tool kit at all times.
Q: How long does shipping take for CMN Transmission PTO shafts?
A: Shipping times for CMN Transmission PTO drive shafts vary by destination. Most orders to North America, Europe, and Australia are delivered within 10 to 20 business days via international freight. Express shipping options are available for urgent orders during peak baling season. CMN provides tracking information for all shipments and their logistics team can coordinate with local customs clearance if needed for your heavy duty PTO shaft order.
Q: Can I order individual PTO shaft replacement parts instead of the complete assembly?
A: Yes. CMN Transmission stocks individual PTO shaft parts including replacement PTO shaft u joint kits, PTO shaft yoke ends, PTO shaft tube inner and outer sections, PTO shaft cover guards, bearing kits, and PTO shaft shear bolt packs. If only one component of your existing tractor PTO shafts driveline is worn, you can order just that part rather than replacing the entire shaft, which helps reduce maintenance costs for budget conscious operations.
Q: Is CMN Transmission's PTO shaft a direct replacement for the original New Holland part?
A: This replacement of New Holland PTO shaft is engineered to match the dimensional, spline, and performance specifications of the original equipment driveline used on BB9050, BB9060, BB9070, and BB9080 models. It is a direct fit aftermarket PTO shaft for New Holland square baler that does not require modifications, adapters, or custom fabrication in most standard tractor configurations. CMN Transmission produces these shafts under ISO and CE quality standards to ensure compatibility and reliability.

Customer Reviews
Marcus Hollingsworth, Farm Manager, United States
"Been running a BB9060 on our 280 acre operation in central Kansas for about six years, and the original PTO shaft finally gave out on us mid season last August. Ordered the CAT5 1000 RPM replacement from CMN Transmission after finding them online. Took about 12 days to arrive, which is fair for international shipping. The fit onto our 1.375-21 spline was spot on, no adapter needed. We are about 220 hours in on the new shaft now through wheat straw and alfalfa, and it has been flawless. Build quality feels genuine, the u-joints are tight, and the guard tube is sturdy. Honestly surprised at the quality for the price compared to what Walterscheid charges. Would order again."
Jean-Pierre Moreau, Agricultural Contractor, France
"We operate three BB9080 balers across our custom harvesting fleet in Beauce region. I purchased two of these PTO shafts from CMN to replace aging Bondioli units. The constant velocity joint quality is very good, and the telescoping section moves smoothly. My mechanics appreciated that the rear jack shaft and bearing mount were included in the package rather than sold separately like with some other brands. After a full season of straw baling, roughly 15,000 bales across both units, both shafts are performing without any issues. The customer service team was responsive when I had questions about spline configuration for our specific tractors. Very satisfied overall."
Robert Kellerman, Dairy Farmer, Germany
"Solid shaft for the price. I use it on my BB9050 for hay baling on our 150 hectare dairy operation in Lower Saxony. Ordered the 540 RPM version with 1.375-6 spline. Shipping took a bit longer than expected, about three weeks to Germany, but the product itself is well made. The u-joints feel tight and the guard system is good quality. One minor issue: the instruction sheet could be more detailed for someone who has not installed one before. I had to call their support line for guidance on the shear bolt torque spec. They were helpful and answered quickly, but a more thorough manual would be appreciated. The shaft itself gets four out of five from me."
James Whitfield, Station Manager, Australia
"Running a BB9070 out on our property in New South Wales, baling cereal hay and oaten straw. We went through the original driveline in about three seasons because the conditions out here are brutal, dust everywhere, heat, and long runs without stopping. CMN's replacement PTO shaft has been on the machine for two seasons now and honestly it is holding up better than I expected. The grease points on the universal joints are well placed and take grease easily, which matters when you are servicing in 40 degree heat in the middle of a paddock. Shipping to Australia was about 16 days. No complaints at all. Recommend to anyone running BB series gear down under."
Carlos Eduardo Santos, Equipment Dealer, Brazil
"As a dealer servicing the sugarcane and soybean regions of Sao Paulo state, I have been buying PTO shaft parts from various suppliers for years. Started stocking CMN products about a year ago after a customer specifically requested them. Since then I have moved about a dozen units for BB9050 and BB9060 balers. Quality is consistent across all the pieces I have received. The packaging is professional and the shafts arrive well protected. My customers report good field performance and no premature failures so far. The wholesale pricing structure works well for my business model. I plan to continue expanding the CMN product line in my inventory."
David Campbell, Arable Farmer, United Kingdom
"I bought this as a spare for our BB9070 that works through about 800 acres of wheat straw each harvest in Yorkshire. The existing Walterscheid shaft was getting tired and I wanted a backup on the shelf so we would not be stuck waiting for parts in the middle of harvest. Unboxed it and checked the fit against the old one and everything matched up dimensionally. The 1.750-6 spline yoke slid straight onto the baler input without issues. Have not needed to run it under full load yet as the old one is still going, but mechanically it looks and feels solid. The only reason I give four stars instead of five is that I have not put enough hours on it to fully vouch for long term durability, but first impressions are very positive."
Pieter van der Merwe, Commercial Farmer, South Africa
"Getting parts for New Holland equipment out here in the Free State can be a real mission. Local dealers are expensive and slow. I found CMN online and decided to take a chance on ordering a PTO shaft for my BB9060. Communication before purchase was excellent, they sent me a spline compatibility chart within 24 hours when I asked. The shaft arrived in about 18 days to Bloemfontein, well packed in a proper wooden crate. Installation was straightforward using their specs. I have about 160 hours on it through teff grass and lucerne hay, and it runs smooth and quiet. At the price point they offer, it is significantly cheaper than sourcing OEM through the dealer network here. Very happy customer."
Alberto Rossi, Contoterzista, Italy
"I run a contract baling business in Emilia Romagna with two BB9080 machines doing hay and straw across the Po Valley. The Bondioli shaft on one machine was getting noisy in the CV joint after three heavy seasons. Replaced it with CMN's unit and the difference was immediately noticeable, much smoother and quieter. The constant velocity design is well executed. After a full summer of work, roughly 12,000 large bales, the shaft shows no signs of wear on the joints or splines. Greasing is easy and the guard system holds up well. For professional operators who need reliable parts without paying premium European brand prices, CMN is a solid choice. I have already ordered a second one for the other baler."
Rajinder Singh, Agricultural Implements Trader, India
"We distribute agricultural equipment and replacement parts across Punjab and Haryana. Started sourcing PTO shafts from CMN Transmission for the New Holland BB series balers that are becoming more common in the larger wheat and rice straw operations here. Product quality is good and consistent across the multiple units we have received. The 1000 RPM CAT5 configuration works with the tractors our customers typically use. Packaging and labeling is professional. My only feedback is that shipping costs to India could be more competitive if they offered better freight consolidation for larger orders. We are discussing this with their sales team. Product itself gets top marks from our field customers. We will continue ordering."
