The rotation then passes through the combination friction\/overrunning clutch assembly positioned at the implement end of the shaft. This clutch serves two distinct protective functions. The friction element works by clamping a set of precisely calibrated friction discs under spring tension to transmit torque up to a predetermined threshold. If the beater encounters an overload condition, such as a large frozen clump of manure or a piece of embedded debris, the friction discs slip rather than transmitting the full shock load into the spreader’s gearbox or back into the tractor’s transmission. This slip-and-protect behavior is what makes a PTO shaft with slip clutch the preferred choice for organic material handling equipment.<\/p>\n

The overrunning component of the clutch operates on a ratchet or roller-ramp principle. When the tractor PTO is disengaged, the spreader’s rotating beater assembly carries significant rotational momentum and tends to continue spinning. Without an overrunning mechanism, this back-torque would drive the PTO shaft in reverse against the stationary tractor stub, potentially damaging the tractor’s PTO engagement components or creating a dangerous jerk in the driveline. The overrunning clutch allows the implement side of the shaft to freewheel ahead of the stationary tractor side, safely absorbing the inertia without mechanical conflict.<\/p>\n

Finally, rotation is delivered through the 1.375-6 spline connection into the Meyer spreader’s input shaft, where the spreader’s internal gearbox steps down speed and multiplies torque to drive the apron chain at approximately 10 RPM and the expellor beaters at up to 540 RPM.
