The complete PTO driveline shaft assembly consists of several integrated sub-systems working in concert. At the tractor end, the PTO shaft yoke engages the tractor’s 1.750-inch, 6-spline PTO stub via a precision-machined, internally splined hub. The yoke transfers torque from this fixed connection through the first PTO shaft universal joint (U-joint) into the telescoping tube section. The telescoping design of the PTO shaft tube is critical: as the tractor turns, travels over uneven terrain, or as the 3-point hitch raises and lowers the mulcher attachment, the PTO shaft length changes dynamically. The inner and outer tubes slide axially within each other, maintaining a constant driveline connection throughout the full operating range. The friction slip clutch component limits the maximum transmittable torque to 1,800 Nm for the 2500 Series \/ 1.750-6 configuration. If the Bull Hog rotor strikes a large obstruction such as a buried rock or a dense hardwood stump, the rotor decelerates abruptly. Without clutch protection, this sudden load spike would transmit enormous shock torque back through the entire driveline, potentially breaking the PTO stub shaft, damaging the tractor’s transmission, or fracturing the gearbox input shaft. The friction disc assembly in the FK96\/4 clutch slips at the preset torque limit, absorbing the shock energy as heat in the friction pack rather than allowing it to propagate into the drivetrain.<\/p>\n

The over-running (free-wheeling) component of the combination clutch addresses a separate but equally important hazard. The Bull Hog’s heavy rotor carries substantial rotational inertia. When the operator disengages the tractor PTO, the rotor does not stop immediately; it continues spinning for several seconds due to this stored kinetic energy. If the driveline were a rigid connection, this coasting rotor would attempt to drive the tractor engine backward through the PTO, causing severe driveline stress. \nSlide the tractor-end PTO shaft yoke (the end with the FK96\/4 combination clutch assembly) onto the tractor’s PTO stub shaft. Align the internal splines of the PTO shaft adapter hub with the tractor PTO splines. Push the yoke fully home and engage the quick-release locking collar or retaining pin, depending on your specific tractor PTO stub design. Tug firmly on the shaft to confirm it is securely locked and cannot pull free. An unsecured PTO shaft is a critical safety hazard and will cause immediate driveline failure if the shaft disengages during operation.<\/p>\n

Ensure that both yoke locking mechanisms are fully engaged before extending the telescoping PTO shaft tube to take up the slack. The yoke phasing at both ends of the PTO shaft universal joint must be correctly aligned (both in the same plane) to minimize torsional vibration and extend PTO shaft parts service life.<\/p>\n

The angle at each U-joint should not exceed 15 degrees during normal operation to prevent vibration and premature wear.
